Last month I was experimenting with randomization a bit, attempting to introduce a more subtle imperfection in timing and velocity, and while I liked the results, I wasn’t done with that sound. This month I wanted to try push the boundaries further in what I could make sound natural. I stuck to a five piece band set up, electric guitar, bass, drums, piano and vocals. I wanted to make something reminiscent of the late 90’s, early 00’s emo or indie rock. Something like that.
What I’ve found interesting while recording this one was the way the lyrics came together. The words came out of essentially nonsense and I kept tweaking them until they were somewhat coherent. But what’s fascinating about that is while it might sound to a listener like they have meaning, they actually sound that way to me too. I find myself wondering, what has my subconscious written about here. It’s an incredibly interesting experience. And, one that sheds some light on how my music-idols as a teenager probably wrote their music. That is to say, it probably kind of wrote itself.
I think I got close to all of my goals with this one, but there’s a stench of something still off hanging in the air. Unfortunately, I’ve pushed and pulled on this one too much already and it’s time to call it done, for better or worse. I spent the last four weeks scratching for opportunities to work on this month’s project which wasn’t so much fun. Time is a fleeting resource, and you only need it when it feels like you have none of it. I am glad that I set out to do this each month, I think it’s stretching me and expanding something in my mind, but at the same time, I will be glad to see the year done so I can see what’s next.
